By comparison with the Institute of Advanced Sciences (IAS), which undertakes outstanding, world-class research in cutting-edge technology research spheres, the Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences (IMS) is a vision-driven research institute seeking to help build an ideal society through interdisciplinary collaboration across diverse research fields that aims to realize a vision for the society of the future. The IMS’s Principal Investigators include many up-and-coming younger researchers who will be playing an important role in the society of the future, and the IMS is aiming to accelerate the strengthening of diversity and interdisciplinary collaboration.
In recent years, the competition in the university sector to secure high-level international research talent has become increasingly intense, and the movement of research talent between countries has accelerated. As with the IAS, which has made the recruitment and securing of first-rate foreign researchers a priority, and has been proceeding with the putting in place of the necessary systems, the IMS has also been forging an international collaboration network with overseas companies, overseas universities, and other international partner organizations, aimed at realizing the YNU’s vision, and has been strengthening measures to build itself into an International Network Hub that will be at the center of innovative, high-level research activities. In addition, by implementing initiatives for ongoing strengthening of collaboration with non-academic bodies, including the local community and industry, the IMS is aiming both to enhance international research capabilities and promote the social implementation of research results.
USTH aims to become a world-class research university with research projects that have long-term academic values, high applicability to socio-economic development. With the strong support of the governing body, VAST, the French Embassy in Vietnam, the Consortium of more than 30 French universities and research institutes, the French Institute of Research for Development (IRD) and with the investment from the Government of Vietnam, USTH has built 2 international joint laboratories and 1 strong research group, 2 potential research groups, bringing the participation of many excellent and experienced scientists at universities, research organizations of Vietnam, France, and many other countries.
Making an opening remark, Prof. Jean-Marc Lavest – Principal Rector of USTH, expressed his delight at the new milestone in the partnership between USTH and IMS. Professor emphasized the importance of higher education, especially in the field of Space and Applications. He hoped that this cooperation would enhance exchange programs for Master and PhD students as well as internship opportunities for Bachelor and Master students of both institutions.
Also at the ceremony, Prof. Hironori Fudeyasu – Director of Typhoon Science and Technology Research Center (IMS) affirmed that current research areas of Typhoon Science and Technology Research Center of IMS are fit for on-going research projects of Department of Space and Applications of USTH which include building a model to predict the changing trend of typhoon, monitoring movement of typhoon in the Pacific Ocean and effects of climate change. In addition, Assoc. Prof. Ngo Duc Thanh – Co-Director of Department of Space and Applications suggested that Department of Space and Applications of USTH and IMS could collaborate in joint research projects about typhoons, ozone and climate change based on long-term cooperation between two sides.
At the end of the ceremony, Prof. Jean-Marc Lavest and Prof. Izuru Umehara signed the cooperation agreement between USTH and IMS, opening up study as well as research opportunities for students, lecturers and researchers of the two parties in the near future.
