University of Science and Technology of Hanoi (USTH) - Vietnam France University is an advanced-model international public university established under the Intergovernmental Agreement between Vietnam and France signed on November 12th, 2009, and the Decision No. 2067/QĐ-TTg dated December 9th, 2009 of the Prime Minister.
USTH delivers degrees in compliance with the LMD system (Bachelor 3 years – Master 2 years – PhD 3 years) in accordance with European Bologna Process.

The doctoral program at USTH was built with the philosophy that the scientist is the essential part of the society. The PhD student will be able to do the research and create new values ​​serving for the development of the society and the scientific community.
The doctoral program was based on research fields at USTH, which allows PhD students to study in an international environment and to prepare for their future careers. Upon graduation, the PhD students are awarded the doctoral degree which is recognized by international institutions.

  1. Research fields and contacts

Students interested in doctoral program of USTH-DoS are required to contact the responsible of the research field at USTH (Director/Co-Director of the research laboratory and department). He/she will be proposed a list of research projects that he/she will select in accordance with responsible. The responsible will indicate to the student one suitable thesis director (supervisor) and eventually a thesis co-director, that student must contact.  The director/co-director will assist students to prepare the research proposal (Item 2) and complete the application dossier (Item 6).

A candidate may also propose a research project to the responsible of the research field, as well as suggest thesis director/co-director who should fit the following requirements (for more details, see PhD regulation on USTH Website

  • Working experience of minimum 3 years after PhD diploma as principal investigator in scientific and technology tasks;
  • USTH faculty or French visiting scientist working in USTH laboratories or USTHassociated laboratories in Vietnam;
  • Principal author of at least one scientific publication in an ISI journal (or of publication as recommended in PhD regulation).

USTH-DoS Scientific Committee will make the final decision on the proposed research project and thesis director/co-director.

  1. Research proposal

The research proposal will be prepared by the candidate assisted and in complete accordance with the thesis director/co-director. It must includes the following informations (maximum 10 A4 pages):

  • Research field and thesis subject;
  • Name and qualities of director/co-director, as approved by USTH-DoS Scientific Committee with their letters of scientific guidance acceptance;
  • Motivation letter of the candidate;
  • List of publications in the research field (if any);
  • 2 recommendation letters from 2 scientists having worked at least 6 months with the candidate;
  • Overview of the thesis subject, and target of the research;
  • Available conditions for the laboratory and research funding;
  • Implementation plan for 3 years and expected results;
  • Intended plan for working after graduation.

  1. Admission fee and tuition fee
  • Admission fee (non-refundable in all cases): 500,000 VND/candidate.
  • The tuition fee will be paid by semester according to USTH regulation.


  1. Scholarship and fellowship

In addition to the financial support agreement with the thesis director (if any), the PhD student who meets one of the following criteria may be considered for scholarships of USTH:

  • Having graduated from Bachelor and Master Programs with very good level and upwards;
  • Having scientific publications (in domestic or international journals) or achieving the scientific research awards at provincial or national level.

The scholarship will be equivalent to between 25% and 100% of tuition fee, depending on the evaluation of the scholarship assessment committee.

Students who belong to the groups below will be considered to be supported a part of his/her living costs during the study time at USTH:

  • Being officers from ethnic minorities, remote areas.
  • People with particularly difficult circumstances.

    1. Degrees
  • Applicant holding a Master degree in or relevant to the research field.


  • Applicant holding a Bachelor degree in or relevant to the research field, with excellent grade (GPA from 9.0/10 onwards), and
  • Author of 01 scientific publication or scientific report in the research field, published in scientific journals or conference proceedings with oral presentation within 03 years (36 months) counting to the application date.
    1. Foreign language requirement
  • Applicants, who have full time Bachelor and/or Master degrees and the study language is English, shall be exempted from providing foreign language certificates.
  • Valid English certificates TOEFL iBT 45 and above or IELTS 5.0 and above delivered by a certified international and Vietnamese examination organization within 2 years counting from the application date.

Applicants have to submit 01 application dossier in English presented on A4 paper including the following documents:

  1. Application form as in the template;
  2. Valid copies of degrees, certificates, transcripts of Bachelor and Master levels. In case these papers are issued by a foreign university, the applicants should include the provisions to evaluate the study result of that university *;
  3. Valid English certificates;
  4. Updated and detailed resume (CV) includind awards and prizes (if any);
  5. Research proposal as required in Item 2 (maximum 10 A4 pages).

*Applicants having completed their Master programs but not yet received their diploma or official academic transcripts can submit a provisional letter of graduation confirmation or academic transcript (valid copies and translations in English). Successful candidates will be required to submit all those documents to be officially accepted.

All the documents of the application dossier must be put in a suitable bag/envelop. The following information should be clearly written on the cover of the bag/envelop:

  1. Full name of applicant;
  2. Home/mobile phone numbers, and Email address;
  3. Research field.
