ToxicPOPs-Pes
- Description
With the rapid industrialization and advanced urbanization in recent years in Haiphong city, residential and industrial wastewater volumes have increased sharply into rivers and estuary. Most of waste water from social-economic activities (such as aquaculture, agriculture, high density of residents and big seaports with busy shipping) discharged into the estuary without treatment. Consequently, water quality of estuaries is impacted and sanitary conditions are deteriorating in estuaries.
The aim of the research project is to assess the POP pesticide residues and to develop and/or apply aquatic species using as bioindicator organisms and biomarkers to evaluate POP pesticide toxicity for the Bach Dang estuary in Hai Phong.
The objectives of this research are (1) to analyse the residues in water and sediments to identify detailed profiles POP pesticides and which are the most problematic contaminants of estuaries in Haiphong; (2) to characterize the toxic effects of emblematic chemicals of the Haiphong’s estuaries contamination with bioassays of bivalves and fish; (3) to determine the lethal and sublethal effects of contaminants on model bivalves and fish through endpoints of bioassays; (4) to contribute the knowledge about using bivalves and fish as alternative or complementary species in ecotoxicology studies.
