A memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the University of Science and Technology of Hanoi – USTH (also called Vietnam France University) and the Institute of Mathematics (IoM) was signed on August 10, 2018. It is expected to open up new cooperative opportunities between the two institutes.

Representatives of IoM at the event

Attendees on the IoM were Prof. Dr. Phung Ho Hai – Director, Assoc.Prof. Nguyen Viet Dung – Vice Director and other resentatives. On the USTH side, there were Prof. Patrick Boiron – Rector; Assoc.Prof. Dinh Thi Mai Thanh and Assoc. Prof. Ngo Duc Thanh – two Vice Rectors and Assoc. Prof. Vu Thi Thu Ha – Co-Director of Administration and staff of the university.

The MoU marks an official partnership between USTH and IoM in the fields of training and research, fostering future joint projects of the two organisations. One of them is the Bachelor training program of Applied Mathematics that is launched from the year 2018-2019 at USTH.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Patrick Boiron spoke highly of the close-knit relationship between USTH and IoM, stressing that cooperating with IoM to develop and open the Applied Mathematics program is a significant move for USTH – a university specialised in science and technology.

He also hoped that with expertise and experience of prestigious reseachers of IoM, the program will be developed much better, meeting the needs of the labour market and attracting more students.

Leaders of the two sides signed the MoU on the behalf of the two organisations

The two sides also discussed ways to promote further the Applied Mathematics program. Besides developing a practical and interesting program, further marketing and partnering with companies that employ mathematics – background students is also mentioned, in order to provide students with more job opportunities after graduation.

They both expect in the MoU

The USTH’s Applied Mathematics program is co-designed by top mathematicians of IoM, including Assoc. Prof. Nguye Viet Dung – Vice Director of IoM. Additionally, the program is conducted with the cooperation of Prof. Jean-Stephane Dhersin - Scientific Deputy Director of the National Institute for Mathematical Sciences and their Interactions (quan (Institut National des sciences mathematiques et de leur interactions), CNRS – France.

The MoU marks an official partnership between USTH and IoM in the fields of training and research, fostering future joint projects of the two organisations.

Including three concentrations, namely Applied Mathematics in Informatics, Applied Mathematics in Computational Science and Applied Mathematics in technical economics, the program is expected to meet the demand of labour market. It will provide students with modern mathematics and programming techniques to optimally and effectively solve problems in math applied fields such as IT, Physics, Finance and Banking.

Besides, students will be equipped with essential soft skills such as problem-solving, leadership, teamwork during the course.  After graduation, students will continue to pursue Masters’ degree programs in Applied Mathematics in domestic and international institutes, or work at enterprises in the fields of Banking, Finance and Telecommunication.
