Two research projects of USTH lecturers have received grants from the National Foundation for Science and Technology Development – NAFOSTED for Phase 1 - 2018, according to the latest result recently released by the foundation.

They are project “Induction of bone formation by polysaccharide derivatives from tamarind seeds” led by Dr. Nguyen Thi Hong Minh in Agricultural biology field and project Assessment of Southeast Asia current and future climate by using regional modeling tool led by USTH Vice-Rector - Assoc.Prof. Ngo Duc Thanh in Earth Sciences field.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Hong Minh

Aiming at contributing to the treatment of osteoporosis and other bone disorders - one of the most common health concerns in Vietnam and in the world, the project of Dr. Nguyen Thi Hong Minh - Lecturer of Department of Pharmacological, Medical and Agronomical Biotechnology, focuses on tamarind seed polysaccharide (TSP) that increases bone formation via increasing alkaline phosphatase activity and mineralization. In particular, the project uses in vitro and in vivo experiments to evaluate the effects of an interest osteogenic compound on bone formation.

In addition, the project hopes to successfully fabricate 3D scaffolds using an advanced 3D printing technology in order to apply in the treatment of osteoporosis and other diseases. It is expected to be the first project in Vietnam uses modern 3D printing technology to fabricate biomaterial scaffold for the treatment of bone disorders in human.

Addressing the risks posed by climate change in Southeast Asia (SEA), the project led by Assoc.Prof. Ngo Duc Thanh aims to provide high-resolution regional climate past simulations and future scenarios including information on extremes over SEA.  Accordingly, it will describe in detail the current climate and future changes over SEA, conduct climate analogue studies and identify the Time of Emergence of the change signal of some climate factors over Vietnam and the SEA area.

With a view to creating a favorable research environment, improving the quality of scientific research and developing human resources for science and technology for Vietnam, the NAFOSTED has sponsored various researches in fundamental and applied science, as well as supported to enhance national science and technology capacity. This is one of the most prestigious funding foundations for scientific research and technology in Vietnam.

Since its inception in 2009, USTH has had 8 projects receiving funding from the NAFOSTED Foundation. The projects of USTH instructors are expected to bring high quality research results, contributing to solve highly debated issues not only in Vietnam but also in the region and the world. At the same time, these sponsored projects are hoped to encourage other USTH researchers to continue contributing to the development of science in particular and the country in general.

Congratulations on the authors whose projects get sponsored!
