The newly appointed Representative of IRD in Vietnam and the Philippines paid a visit to USTH

On April 1, 2022, the Rector Board of USTH had a meeting and working session with Dr. Edmond Dounis, newly appointed Director of the representative office of the Institute of Research for Development (IRD), France in Vietnam and the Philippines. This was the first visit of Dr. Edmond Dounis to USTH in his new position.

Attending the reception were Prof. Jean-Marc Lavest - Principal Rector of USTH; Assoc. Prof. Dinh Thi Mai Thanh – Rector of USTH, Mr. Luc Le Calvez – Director of Research, Innovation and Technology Transfer Direction, and Assoc. Prof. Tran Dinh Phong – Director of Department of Fundamental and Applied Sciences, Co-Director of Research, Innovation, and Technology Transfer Direction.

At the meeting, Prof. Jean-Marc Lavest congratulated Mr. Edmond Dounis on his newly appointed position and thanked IRD for always actively supporting USTH.

He also shared with Mr. Edmond Dounis the achievements of USTH in training, research, and international cooperation activities as well as our strategic plans. Prof. Jean-Marc Lavest emphasized that entering an important phase of development, along with strategies in expanding the training scale and improving the quality of training and research, USTH aims to become a world-class university, recognized in the region and in the world. The construction project of the USTH Campus in Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park was kicked off in September 2021 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2023. USTH will be equipped with modern and synchronous facilities, following the model of universities in France and Europe to serve the training and research of lecturers, researchers, and students. With the support of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, USTH is going to expand our training activities in Ho Chi Minh City with the recruitment of the 3 training programs in 2023. Moreover, thanks to the support of the Government of France, the members of the USTH Consortium, including IRD, USTH will focus on attracting and increasing the number of international students, especially from countries in Southeast Asia and African countries belonging to the Francophone community.

Being a member of the USTH Consortium and also an important partner of USTH, IRD has supported USTH to build international joint laboratories to bring together experienced researchers and experts from Vietnam and abroad to work on research projects solving current global hot issues as such health care, combating climate change, and sustainable development. IRD has supported USTH to build 4 international joint laboratories, including Laboratory “Rice Functional Genomics and Biotechnology for Plants and associated Microorganisms” (LMI-RICE) (Stopped), Laboratory “Drug Resistance in Southeast Asia” (LMI-DRISA), Laboratory “Land Ocean aTmosphere regional coUpled System” (LMI-LOTUS), Laboratory “Information, Communication and Technology” (ICTLab). USTH students can benefit from participating in research projects in those international joint laboratories to improve and develop their research skills. Besides, IRD has sent French experts and researchers to work and participate in research activities at USTH.

Assoc. Prof. Dinh Thi Mai Thanh expressed her great appreciation for the support of IRD and emphasized the importance of the international joint laboratories for our research activities. She hoped that IRD will continue to accompany and support the University to develop these international joint laboratories and improve the research quality.

Dr. Edmond Dounis thanked the Rector Board of USTH for the warm welcome and expressed his delight at the development of USTH. To achieve the upcoming goals, USTH will face many challenges; however, he believed that USTH would be able to turn difficulties into opportunities based on its advantages thanks to the support of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the Government of France, and the USTH Consortium. IRD will continue to accompany and support USTH in the upcoming important phase of development.

At the end of the meeting, Mr. Edmond Dounis visited the laboratories at USTH and had a meeting with the leaders of the academic departments to learn more about the training and research activities.

The visit ended successfully, opening up new cooperation opportunities in the future.
