On September 10th 2018, University of Science and Technology of Hanoi (USTH) held a seminar on "Artificial Intelligence and Data Science in the Digital Transformation time" with the speaker, Prof.  Ho Tu Bao, attracting the participation of more than 200 researchers and students.

The seminar was attended by Prof. Ho Tu Bao, an excellent scientist with more than 40 years of experience teaching and conducting research in many prestigious institutions in the field of Artificial Intelligence, Machine learning as well as Data science.

Currently, Prof. Ho Tu Bao is Director of John von Neumann Institute (JVN Institute), Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City. JVN Institute is the main partner of USTH in developing the Master program of Science in Quantitative and Computational Finance, the first training program in Hanoi providing knowledge of applied mathematics and computational skills to solve problems related to risk management and financial returns optimization.

At the seminar, GS. Ho Tu Bao explained the core concepts of artificial intelligence and data science; as well as presented national strategies of different countries and discussed possible plans for Vietnam in the digital transformation time.

Recent scientific breakthroughs has allowed people to digitalize almost every entity in the world, and thus connect their digital versions to the internet, creating a network called Internet Of Things (IoT). Data science plays the role of "the brain" in the analysis of the data, before using artificial intelligence to make the decision on real-world activities.

These days, data science is increasingly playing an essential role in all aspects of life such as health, banking, transportation and tourism. Through the process of data analysis, it strongly supports organizations and companies in making effective decisions. In the digital transformation time, the one who masters the big data gains a huge competitive advantage to become the winner.

Indeed, Prof. Ho Tu Bao asserted that the race among nations in the digital revolution was mainly based on the development of data science. Accordingly, in other words, the leading country in the digital time is not only the one that would manage the complex data of IoT, but also would combine data science and artificial intelligence to manipulate such data, bringing a more comfortable and "intelligent" life for human beings.

Finally, Professor emphasized that Data Science is “the key to digital technology." Therefore, in order not to be behind the times, Vietnam's current goal is to focus on building and developing the data infrastructure and at the same time training the qualified workforce, especially the "elite" experts, who are able to master this huge informational network.

According to Harvard Business Review, Data Scientist is considered as "the most attractive job in the 21st century." Glassdoor also announced that the average salary of a data scientist in 2014 was $118,709 in the comparison with $64,537, that of a programmer. According to the McKinsey Global Institute forecast, by 2018, the United States may face a lack of 140,000 to 190,000 data analysts, and 1.5 million managers equipped big data knowledge to make more effective decisions. The employees with data science skills have a lot of potential opportunities for professional growth.

In Vietnam, many big corporations like Facebook, Lazada, Tiki, Grab... are largely focusing on the application of the Data Science and recruit a large number of employee in this field to boost business growth.
