Elecity: The electrified city - sustainable cities in the context of energy transition

Clean Energy and Sustainable Development Laboratory (CleanED) and University of Stuttgart, Germany co-organized workshop, namely "Elecity: The Electrified City - Sustainable Cities in the Context of Energy Transition" on 6th November 2017.    

The workshop was divided into four sessions: integrated transition pathways for energy systems, urban development, renewables and industry, and transport and air pollution control. Five magatrends, including transition, mobility growth, urbanization, digitazation and air pollution control were discussed throughout the workshop.

The workshop was an opportunity for speaker and guests share their experiences in energy usage in Germany as well as status quo and challenges Vietnam is facing. 
Mr. Nguyen Hoai Son, researcher at CleanED lab and a lecturer at Economics Department, National Economics University assessed energy sector and electricity sector in Vietnam. His findings showed electricity sector is meeting several obstacles, such as there is a big gap between economics and electricity growth, insufficient public investment because of high debt-to-GDP ratio.

Ms. Truong An Ha, researcher in Center of Research and Technology Transfer - Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, also a second year PhD student at CleanED laboratoty pointed out that Vietnam has diversified and abundant renewable resources, including wind, solar, biomass and small hydropower. However, the current development of renewable energy in Vietnam still does not meet its potential. Supporting mechanism to increase the share of renewable energy has been formed, first for small hydro, then wind, bioenergy and solar energy.

According to Ms. Tanja Schaefer, Geographer and Senior Project Manager in Transport Policy and Research Department of PTV since 2000, "Vietnam is on the right track when developing urban rail systems and restricting motorcycles." Tanja Schaefer suggests: "The development of the electric bus system as well as the services of renting / sharing electric motorcycles also contribute to the development of public transport, which has the potential to increase electricity efficiency. "

In line with Ms. Tanja Schaefer, Dr.Eng. Lam Quoc Dat stated that traffic management must become key strategy in the urban transport developement process of Hanoi. Cleaner and safer motorcycle in combination with bus transport improvement should be emphasized. BRT is an alternative mean of transport in Vietnam because it is more cost effective, can be constructed more quickly and is environment friendly. 
The Clean Energy and Sustainable Development (CleanED) lab is an international and interdisciplinary research team contributing to the green growth of the energy sector in Vietnam. We are at USTH —the University of Science and Technology of Ha Noi— on the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) campus in the Cau Giay area of Hanoi. Established in December 2014 with support from the French Embassy, the CleanED lab hosts today four researchers from France and Vietnam, four doctoral fellows and one internationally qualified staff under the direction of Dr. Ha Duong Minh.

The CleanED lab is a working place for researchers, doctoral fellows and students from USTH's Energy department in Hanoi. We welcome Bachelor and Master level interns. Most are coming from or going to our partner laboratories in France: CIRED/CNRS, LAGEP/Université de Lyon, LOG/Université du Littoral, G2ELab/UJF, other USTH consortium members, and our partner institute in Vietnam: IES/VAST.
