University of Science and Technology of Hanoi (USTH, Vietnam France university) would like to invite lecturers, researchers, experts, students and others to participate in the workshop “Science and society, Science in society” on the occasion of USTH Doctoral Days on 15 and 16 May, 2019.
The workshop is organized by the Doctoral School of USTH, Institute of Research for the Development (IRD) and USTH Consortium. It aims to give analytical tools to researchers, which will allow them address issues arising from these interfaces between sciences and society.
With the topic “From laboratory to innovation, technology transfer, public debates and scientific controversies”, the workshop will welcome 4 experienced French scientists as the main speakers. The workshop will have 2 sessions as below:
Session 1: Does plant genome-editing research need regulations?

Dr. Jean-Christophe Glaszmann, researcher at Cirad, the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development, in Montpellier.
Dr. Pierre-Benoit Joly, Directeur de recherche at the National Institute of Agronomic Research (INRA) in France.
Session 2: Pharmacology, traditional knowledge and the issue of access and benefit sharing

Speakers:
Dr. Eric Deharo, researcher at the Institute of Research for the Development (IRD), specializing in health issues in a context of developing country.
Dr. Frédéric Thomas, researcher at the International Joint Laboratory RICE, nationally and internationally recognized expert, on the social issues related to intellectual property rights on plant innovations and access to genetic resource and benefits sharing.
Through the presentations and discussion, the speakers will provide different insights of different issues surrounding a new technology or a new scientific research and present the expected solutions provided by the new technology or innovation, the advantages for different users, the uncertainties arising from the innovation at stake and the reasons of the possible controversies. The workshop is expected to provide young researchers better knowledge of analytical tools, applying in their research.
