Team of University of Science and Technology of Hanoi – USTH (also called Vietnam France University) has won one gold, two silver and one bronze at a week-long competition of the National Mathematical Olympiad 26 for Students and Pupils in Quang Binh province.
The National Mathematical Olympiad for Students and Pupils is co-organized by Ministry of Education and Training, Vietnam Mathematical Association, Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations, Central Vietnam Student Association. It aims to improve the teaching and learning of Mathematics, promote Mathematics study among Vietnamese students and foster their talent. It also offers opportunities for Mathematics lovers to meet and share ideas with other students across the country.
This year’s event took place from April 9-14, 2018 at Quang Binh University with attendance of 90 groups from 79 universities, colleges, institutes and 11 gifted high school across the country. Close to 800 candidates competed in two categories, namely algebra and analysis. At the closing ceremony, the organizing board awarded 67 first prizes, 126 second prizes and 193 third prizes.
Despite the first time participating the competition, USTH contestants strived very hard and won high prizes. Particularly, Nguyen Dan Chi – Foundation Year Student of the 2017-2020 course – claimed one gold in Algebra and a silver in Algebra belonged to Le Hanh Vi – Foundation Year Student of the 2017-2020 course. Meanwhile, Nguyen Dinh Mau – Second Year Student of ICT Department – grabbed one gold in Algebra and one bronze in Analysis.
Nguyen Dan Chi said the team only had two months to prepare for the competition, while they still had to study main subjects, so the candidates reviewed lessons for the contest themselves most of the time.
Chi added that she was nervous before the competition because it was a rather big event and attracted numerous excellent students. However, she felt more confident to do all the questions.
This year’s contest included interesting questions that highly classify candidates. Some require participant to have comprehensive knowledge while some seek logical thinking. Also, the exams asked candidates to be careful in their expression and presentation.
Besides, USTH team teamed up with Vietnam-Hung Industrial University and Hanoi Pedagogical University 2 in a mini football tournament – a sideline event of the competition- and claimed a victory.
As a university with a focus on science and technology, USTH often encourage students to take part in extra-cirricular events or competition like Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry Olympiad to meet other peers and enhance their knowledge and ability.
Mathematics is one of the fundamental sciences widely applied in social life today. Therefore, from the academic year of 2018 – 2019, USTH opens the Applied Mathematics training program for Bachelor with the participation of experienced lecturers from prestigious institutes of Vietnam and international partners of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.
