On May 22, 2023, University of Science and Technology of Hanoi (USTH) successfully hosted the 9th University Council Meeting, bringing together members from Vietnam and France. The meeting aimed to provide valuable contributions and insights for the future development of the university.
Combining both online and in-person formats, the meeting ensured the full attendance of Council members from both countries.
The meeting attendees included Prof. Chu Hoang Ha, Vice President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) and Chairman of the University Council; Mr. Nguyen Anh Dung, Deputy Head of Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Training; Dr. Le Viet Anh, Head of Department of Science, Education, Resources, and Environment, Ministry of Planning and Investment; Mr. Dang Ngoc Hoa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Airlines; Prof. Dominique Laffly, Scientific and University Cooperation Counselor, French Embassy in Vietnam; Prof. Edmond Dounias, Representative of IRD in Vietnam; Mr. Patrick Nedellec, Vice Chairman of the University Council, and other council members representing ministries, universities, research institutes, and businesses from Vietnam and France.
During the opening speech, Prof. Chu Hoang Ha acknowledged USTH’s remarkable achievements and expressed satisfaction with the university’s strong growth in terms of training quality and research advancements. He wished for a successful meeting and expressed confidence in the Council members’ contributions to USTH’s continued development as a reputable university in the field of science and technology.
At the meeting, Prof. Jean-Marc Lavest and Assoc. Prof. Dinh Thi Mai Thanh presented a comprehensive report on the university’s progress until the first half of 2023. Notably, USTH achieved an 18.13% increase in the number of enrolled students compared to 2021, marking the highest number of enrolled students since the university’s establishment. The university also strengthened collaborations with French universities, resulting in the launch of three double-degree programs, expanding the total number of bachelor’s programs offered at USTH to 19.
USTH demonstrated the commitment to meeting international standards in training and research by actively engaging with the High Council for Evaluation of Research and Higher Education (HCERES) to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of all aspects of the university including management, research, and training areas. The evaluation report by HCERES is expected to be released in July 2023.
In terms of research, USTH achieved significant milestones, with 125 papers published in renowned SCI-E journals, averaging 1.6 papers per a lecturer. The university’s research output ranked second among institutions under VAST based on the Impact Factor index.
USTH continued to expand its international collaboration network, establishing partnerships with institutions in Vietnam, France, and Japan through 21 agreements and memoranda of understanding. Noteworthy collaborations were formed with French universities such as Aix-Marseille University, University of Paris-Est Créteil, University of Limoges, and University of Sorbonne Paris Nord, resulting in the implementation of three double degree programs between Vietnam and France.
With the support of the Governments of Vietnam and France, as well as VAST, USTH emphasized investment in infrastructure, including modern classrooms, well-equipped laboratories, and synchronized facilities, to accommodate the growing scale of training and research activities.
The University Council engaged in meaningful discussions and made important contributions, resulting in the approval of crucial initiatives that will shape the university’s trajectory in the upcoming time. These included the re-appointment of Prof. Jean-Marc Lavest as the Principal Rector and the re-appointment of Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Hai Dang as the Vice Rector; the proposal to open master’s programs in Biomedical Science, and Food Safety and Security, as well as a doctoral program in Chemistry.
The 9th Council Meeting of USTH concluded successfully, marking a significant milestone for the university and paving the way for its future advancements.
