Amid the growing trend of global educational integration, the University of Science and Technology of Hanoi (USTH) has increasingly established itself as an attractive destination for international students and interns. Let’s meet Théo Douget – a “student-entrepreneur” (étudiant entrepreneur) from the prestigious French engineering school SIGMA Clermont – to hear about his experience in UAV technology research and his exciting cultural adaptation at USTH.
From SIGMA Clermont to USTH: The unexpected connection of a “Student-Entrepreneur”
Théo Douget is currently a Mechanical Engineering major at SIGMA Clermont (a member of the INP Clermont Group, France), specializing in Machines, Robotics, and Systems. Alongside his outstanding academic track record, Théo is known in France as an étudiant entrepreneur through his project Anonym-IA. This technological solution helps professionals anonymize and pseudonymize personal data before applying artificial intelligence.
When asked about his reasons for choosing Vietnam and USTH for his mandatory international internship (minimum of 17 weeks), Théo shared:
“I chose Vietnam and USTH because I was looking for a comprehensive international experience, not just a technical internship. USTH possesses a strong bond between France and Vietnam, with significant strengths in science, technology, and research. This is an excellent opportunity for me to work in a multinational environment while exploring a rapidly developing country with strong technological potential.”
Notably, on his very first day at USTH, Théo experienced a delightful surprise during his meeting with the University Administration. One of the first people to welcome him was Professor Jean-Marc Lavest – the Principle Rector of USTH, who also previously served as the Director of Théo’s home institution, SIGMA Clermont. This unexpected cross-border connection gave the young Frenchman a sense of both amazement and familiarity, allowing him to feel completely at ease as he began his research journey in a new country.

The UAV research project and an innovation mindset in the laboratory
At USTH, Théo is involved in a highly applicable research project related to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), computer vision, artificial intelligence (AI), and autonomous control. The core objective of the project is to develop a drone system capable of autonomously detecting, identifying, and tracking a moving object.
Despite having been in Vietnam for only three weeks, Théo quickly adapted to the research pace thanks to the dedicated guidance of his supervisor at USTH. During the initial weeks, his supervisor helped him define a clear direction for the project, provided strategic advice for major decisions and subsequent implementation steps, and offered close technical support whenever necessary.
- In terms of professional expertise: The project initially helps Théo translate theory into practice, working directly with robotics – the field he aims to pursue in his future career.
- In terms of entrepreneurship: Although he did not initially choose USTH for his personal startup project, Théo admits that the technological environment here has greatly inspired him. The research environment encourages him to think differently, adopt new working methodologies, maintain an innovation mindset, and become more aware of the transnational impact of a technology project.
“Crossing Boundaries”: Cultural adaptation and memorable experiences in Hanoi
The journey from a temperate European country to a dynamic Hanoi inevitably came with some initial surprises. For Théo, the preparation process happened quite quickly, as he had just finished his schedule in Canada one week earlier and had only one weekend to “switch gears” before arriving in Vietnam.
Théo’s first impression upon arriving at Noi Bai International Airport was the characteristic combination of summer weather: hot and humid. Furthermore, the bustling lifestyle and high traffic density of Hanoi posed a challenge.
“One of my most amusing and memorable experiences was learning how to cross the street in Hanoi. In France, you usually wait for cars to stop and yield. Here in Vietnam, you have to sense the rhythm of the traffic flow and walk slowly and confidently.”
Reflecting on USTH students, Théo expressed his admiration for the diligence, friendliness, and openness of Vietnamese students. The campus atmosphere is much more inclusive and warm than what an international student might initially expect.

Expectations for the next chapter at USTH
During the remaining period of his internship at USTH, Théo aims to complete the first functional version of his drone system. At the same time, he hopes to expand his network, meet more friends and colleagues at USTH, and gain a deeper understanding of the academic environment and local culture.
Théo Douget’s journey at USTH is a clear example of how the university is not only a place for knowledge exchange but also a bridge connecting cultures and a space that nurtures global perspectives among young technology enthusiasts. USTH continues to welcome international students to study, conduct research, and create meaningful experiences together throughout their academic journeys.
