The development of green chemistry in Vietnam is one of the cooperative initiatives between the Vietnam Chemical Society (CSV) and the Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry (KSIEC). Since 2012, within the framework of this cooperation, annual workshops and seminars on green chemistry have been held in either Korea or Vietnam, becoming a reputable forum in the scientific community of both countries to share information and achievements in the research and application of green chemistry.
On February 24, University of Science and Technology of Hanoi (USTH) proudly hosted the 12th Green Chemistry workshop in collaboration with the Vietnam Chemical Society and the Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry. The workshop drew the participation of nearly 100 delegates, including esteemed experts from both countries, aiming to provide information on advancements in both academia and industry in the field of green chemistry.
At the opening of the workshop, Professor Jean-Marc Lavest, the principal rector of USTH, delivered a welcome speech to the delegation from the Vietnam Chemical Society and the Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry. Additionally, professor expressed hopes for collaboration not only in research but also in the education between Vietnam and Korea in the future.
Speaking at the workshop, Dortor Do Duy Phi, President of CSV, affirmed that green chemistry is an inevitable development in the field of chemistry, not only in Vietnam but also worldwide. It is believed as a future trend that encourages the design and development of chemical processes and the production of new products that minimize the use or generation of harmful substances for humans and the environment. Additionally, maximizing the efficiency of resource and material utilization through closed-loop processes, ensuring sustainable development, is also a goal to strive for.
Professor Bongjun Yeom, Head of the International Cooperation Department of KSIEC, welcomed the workshop and emphasized the sustainable collaboration between the two parties. He also shared his vision for the integrated development of the two countries in the field of green chemistry, aiming to convey the positive values of this industry in the education of students at universities.
Participants at the workshop had the opportunity to update themselves on the latest information regarding advancements in green chemistry research and applications through 11 presentations and discussions (along with 51 posters) by scientists from Vietnam and Korea, focusing on the theme of multifunctional materials in biological and energy applications. The workshop consisted of two sessions: Session 1 – Multifunctional Materials in Energy and Environmental Technology, and Session 2 – Multifunctional Materials in Biomaterials Technology, Pure Chemicals, and Nano Materials. The research focused on developing new materials for biosensors, medical applications, conversion processes, green fuel production, environmentally friendly pesticides, and next-generation energy storage. The workshop concluded with an interview session for the KSIEC scholarship review for graduate candidates in chemical engineering.
