Many important points related to training and research activities have been approved at the fifth University Council of the University of Science and Technology of Hanoi (USTH, Vietnam France University), which was held on April 12, 2019.
The council was attended by Mr. Bertrand Lortholary, Ambassador of Republic of France in Vietnam; Prof.Acad. Chau Van Minh, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (governing body of USTH) cum. Chairman of the University Council and 18 members of the University Council, which are representatives of Ministries, universities, research institutes and companies in Vietnam and France.
During the opening speech, Prof.Acad. Chau Van Minh asserted that the fifth University Council was held in a special context when there have been many positive factors contributing to the development of USTH. Firstly, the Vietnamese government approved to extend 05 years for the project to build a 65ha campus for USTH in Hoa Lac, serving for study and research activities of USTH lecturers and students in the near future. The project is expected to begin construction on March 2020.
Besides, in November 2018, the Intergovernmental Agreement between Vietnam and France for the development of USTH for the period of 5 years from 2019 to 2023 was signed, in which the Vietnamese and French governments show determination and commitment to develop USTH to become an excellent university and one of the top universities in the South East Asia. Thanks to these favorable conditions, USTH is entering a brand new phase of development: the phase of expansion in research and training activities to develop sustainably.
Many important points for the development of USTH were discussed and voted at the event, including the selection of USTH new rector.
Also at the 5th University Council, USTH signed cooperation agreements with the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training), USTH Consortium and two research institutes under VAST: the Center for Research and Technology Transfer and the Vietnam National Museum of Nature.
Especially, USTH signed with USTH Consortium a framework agreement, committing the contribution of both parties in the development of bachelor, master and doctoral degrees; as well as in scientific research, technology and innovation. The two parties agrees to start working on the issuance of double degrees accredited by USTH and French universities in USTH Consortium for Bachelor programs, which plans to start in the academic year 2020-2021.
During the event, Assoc.Prof. Dinh Thi Mai Thanh – USTH Acting Rector presented USTH’s annual report of the academic year 2017-2018 and plan for the upcoming year.
In the academic year 2017-2018, USTH accomplished more achievements compared to the previous year. The number of enrolled bachelor students increased by 66% and that of students who took internship overseas upped to 60%. In addition, USTH continued to be ranked by Nature Index in Top 10 of universities and research institutes in Vietnam ; the scientific research of Dr. Tran Dinh Phong, Director of the Fundamental and Applied Sciences Department, was granted Ta Quang Buu award.
