A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between University of Science and Technology – USTH (also called Vietnam France University) and Ireland’s University College Cork (UCC) took place on January 19, 2018 at USTH.
The ceremony was witnessed on the University College Cork side was Prof. Brian Ó Gallachóir, Director of MaREI, Environmental Research Institute, UCC and members of the Energy Policy and Modelling Group, including, Prof. Fionn Rogan, Prof. John Paul Deane, Dr. Tomas Mac Uidhir and Dr. Sean McAuliffe.
On the USTH side were Prof. Patrick Boiron – Rector of UsTH; Assoc. Prof. Ha Duong Minh – Director of the Clean Energy and Sustainable Development lab; Dr. Nguyen Trinh Hoang Anh – Lecturer of Department of Energy and Ms. Nguyen Thi Ha Nhung – Head of Division of International Cooperation.
The MoU marked an establishment of cooperative partnership in research and training between USTH and UCC. Accordingly, the two sides agreed to strengthen their bilateral ties through joint activities such as will implement exchanges of lecturers, students and experts as well as academic publications and relevant projects. The cooperation is expected to foster research and teaching activities of the two sides.
During the event, representatives shared information about training programmes and research as well as facilities of the two organisations. At the end of the event, the representative of UCC visited the CleanED lab and other international-standardised laboratory of USTH.
Established in 1845, University College Cork is one of the oldest universities in Ireland. It is also one of the world-leading universities in scientific research, especially industry, technology and business field. In addition, it has been named as Irish University by the Sunday Times for five times, most recently in 2017 and became the first university to achieve the ISO 50001 standard in energy management in 2011.
Furthermore, UCC is one of the main partners of USTH in the “Building capacity in the model of energy and climate planning” project, within the Vietnam-Ireland Bilateral Educational Exchange Programme sponsored by the Embassy of Ireland through Irish Aid programme.
The same day, the kick-off meeting of the “Building capacity in the model of energy and climate planning” project was held at USTH with participation of Nuala O’Brien, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Ireland, the representative group of UCC, the Rectorate Board as well as lecturers and officials of the the CleanED lab and the Department of Energy of USTH.

During the event, participants presented main information of the project and action plans for relevant sides under the framework of the project.

The project, worth of 122,000 Euro, aims to develop high quality labour in the field of research and teaching regarding model of energy and climate planning in Vietnam as well as increasing international cooperation between organizations in Vietnam and Ireland.

Besides the main partners such as the CleanED Lab, USTH and Ireland’s University College Cork, the project also include the Centre for Marine and Renewable Energy, Environmental Research Institute.
