A launching ceremony of two international standard aviation training programs was co-organised by the aircraft manufacturer Airbus and the University of Science and Technology of Hanoi – USTH (also called Vietnam France University) at the Embassy of France on June 27th, 2018.
These are a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Maintenance and Engineering Operations and a Master of Science in International Air Transport Operations Management (IATOM). They have been established in partnership between USTH with Vietnam Airlines, Vietnam Airlines Engineering Company, France’s Ecole Nationale de l’Aviation Civile (ENAC), Institut Aéronautique et Spatial (IAS) and with the financial support of Airbus. The first batch of Vietnamese students will start both courses in September 2018.
Attended the ceremony was Mr. Bertrand Lortholary – French Ambassador to Vietnam, Prof. Phan Ngoc Minh – Vice President of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) – governing body of USTH; Mr. Pham Ngoc Minh – Chairman of Vietnam Airlines; Mr. Jean-Francois Laval – Airbus Executive Vice President, Customer Affairs, Asia; Mr. Mai Anh Tuan – President and CEO of VAECO; Prof. Patrick Boiron – Rector of USTH and representatives of ENAC and IAS.
Speaking at the launching event, Mr. Bertrand Lortholary, French Ambassador to Vietnam, expressed his delight in the progress in the educational cooperation betweem Vietnam and France. He stressed that USTH is France’s largest abroad tertiary education project that was established under the intergovernmental agreement between the two countries in 2009. The two new aviation programs at USTH are launched before the conclusion of the first phase of the intergovernmental agreement (2009-2019) in less than 2 years, which is a genuinely special and meaningful, he said.
Looking back on the first 10 years of development, both sides are pleased with the achievement and have been preparing to submit the intergovernmental agreement Phase 2 to the two countries’ governments so that it will be able to be signed at the end of 2018.
For his part, Mr Jean Francois Laval, – Airbus Executive Vice President, Customer Affairs, Asia, said Airbus was approached to support the aviation training programs at USTH in 2016. Since the beginning the company has worked actively with Vietnam Airlines and other Vietnamese partners to identify human resource demand in the industry.
Thus, Airbus has cooperates with USTH to submit the project of the two programs, which are Aeronautical Engineering and IATOM to train and enhance capacity and knowledge for domestic employees of the industry, he added.
Airbus pledged a US $2.5 million financial aid for the administration of two international aviation programs during the period 2018-2023. In particular, the company will award up to US $ 8,500 scholarships to the three best students of IATOM to support living expenses and airfare when they study at ENAC in France in semesters 2 and 3.
Besides Airbus, the two programs are also strongly supported by the two largest aviation education institutes in France, namely ENAC and IAS, together with Vietnam Airlines and VAECO. Accordingly, IAS is involved in the program development and lecturers of the Engineering program while ENAC takes charge of the IATOM. For its part, Vietnam Airlines allows Aeronautical Engineering students to take 6-month internship at VAECO and commits to recruit 30 top students after graduation.
Mr. Jean Francois Laval believes that with the support of Vietnam Airlines, VAECO and the aviation experts from IAS and ENAC, the Aeronautical Engineering and IATOM programs will provide an international standard training quality and become role models on aviation training, especially in the field of maintenance and operation, thus to meet the needs of the growing market in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.
Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Patrick Boiron, Rector of USTH, emphasized the importance of developing Aeronautical programs in the university’s training strategy, and also thanked the support of VAST, the USTH’s governing body and its partners Vietnam Airlines, VAECO, Airbus, ENAC and IAS.
For the first courses in September, 2018 USTH has recruited 40 students (via dossier assessment and interviews in English) for the Aeronautical Engineering program and is expected to enroll 10 students for the IATOM program.
