On October 18 and 19, 2018, the Clean Energy and Sustainable Development (CleanED) laboratory, University of Science and Technology of Hanoi (USTH) successfully held a short training and seminar on Energy planning and Sustainable Development.
The training course is a part of the project “Capacity Building on Energy and Climate Modelling”, under the framework of the Vietnam-Ireland bilateral education exchange program. The project is funded 122,000 Euros for two years 2018-2019 by the Irish Aid – an official agency for International Development of the Irish Government.
The event was attended by several respected experts working in the field of Energy, including Prof. Bui Huy Phung – Chairman of Vietnam Energy Science Council, Dr. Tran Duy Chau – R&D Expert at EDF (France), Chairman of Association of Electrical Engineering and Energy (AEEE), Dr. Nguyen Quoc Khanh – Expert on Energy Planning; Dr. Nguyen Dinh Quang – Co-Director of USTH’s Energy department, Dr. Nguyen Trinh Hoang Anh – lecturer-researcher of the Energy department, Principal Investigator of the project; as well as a great number of USTH lecturers, scientists and students.
Nowadays, all countries around the world are coping with a challenging question of efficient exploitation of sustainable energy, and Vietnam is not an exception. The training and seminar organized by CleanED laboratory aims to provide the attendants with an overview of the energy planning in Vietnam, as well as the country’s potentials, challenges and objectives in the energy transition time.
According to Dr. Duong Ha Minh, Director of the CleanED Laboratory, the Energy Planning involves the forecast of future energy use, thus finding an effective and lasting solution of energy production to meet this demand. In fact, the Vietnam Power Development Plan VII (revised) showed that the demand on energy in Vietnam will continue to increase sharply over the coming years, with about 130,000 MW of electricity being produced by 2030, which would be 5 times higher than that in 2015. Therefore, in order to fill the difference, Vietnam needs to rapidly look for renewable energy sources such as wind energy, solar energy and hydrogen energy.
Furthermore, potential solutions to address the issue of growing energy demand in Vietnam were introduced during the training and generated open discussions between the experts and the attendants. The Energy Storage Systems (ESS), the Smart Grid or the Long-range Energy Alternatives Planning system (LEAP) seem to be realistic resolutions to improve the quality of power supply, as well as to open new directions for the exploitation of renewable energy in Vietnam.
Thanks to this training and seminar, the attendants, especially students from the Energy department of USTH, had much greater awareness of the application and the necessity of energy planning in Vietnam’s sustainable development.
Prior to that, in July, also in the framework of the project, a working group of USTH’s Energy department visited the University College Cork in Ireland. On this occasion, USTH’s representatives had the opportunity to meet experts at the Centre for International Energy Research to discuss about the green development scenarios in Vietnam.
