The WEO Department focuses research activities in water and environmental sciences and their application, including environmental monitoring, water treatment (supply water, wastewater) and reuse as well as ecological engineering, modeling, remote sensing, environmental engineering.
Our research employs advanced technologies and tools to conduct high quality research projects. The skills of the department members enable us to:
- Monitor environment quality and ecosystem health and propose support for their management,
- Measure water, air and soil quality parameters, and evaluate the fluxes of contaminants from land to the ocean,
- Study and simulate the water cycle and the spreading of contaminants in hydrosystems (pesticides, microplastics, black carbon etc.),
- Improve the scientific knowledge on the involved processes,
- Develop new methods, in particular nature-based or eco-friendly methods, to remove contaminants from soils and waters, including ecological engineering, waste water treatment and drinking water treatment
With a strong cooperative foundation with top French universities and research institutions, the WEO Department is participating in various international research projects. In addition, we also have wide collaborations with top Vietnamese researchers and institutions. The dynamic work and collaboration of the Department have resulted in many high quality publications.
LOTUS: a Vietnamese-French Joint Laboratory
LOTUS is a French-Vietnamese collaborative work, exchange and training structure for the study of the water cycle and transported materials (sediment, biogeochemistry, organic contaminants, plastics, Black Carbon, etc.) in the atmosphere-continent-ocean continuum in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. It gathers researchers from Vietnamese and French teams, now willing to build a federative common laboratory at USTH to contribute to answer to Viet Nam demand and needs for a sustainable development. It is led by Marine Herrmann (WEO & IRD-LEGOS) and Ngo Duc Thanh (USTH, Space & Application Dept.). Several members of the WEO department are involved in LOTUS. The LOTUS laboratory funds research, field trips, equipment, analysis, internships and offers PhD thesis opportunities. Since 2018, 5 PhD theses have been defended, 13 PhDs are in progress, 43 international articles have been published. More information on: http://lotus.usth.edu.vn/
