On August 30th, 2018, the University of Science and Technology of Hanoi – USTH held the Opening Ceremony for the new academic year 2018-2019 as well as the Graduation Ceremony for the intake 2015- 2018 with the attendance of many distinguished guests, lecturers, staff and students.
The ceremony was attended by Prof. Academician. Chau Van Minh – President of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) – the governing body of USTH; Prof. Academician. Nguyen Van Hieu, Formal Rector of USTH; Mr. Etienne Rolland Piegue, the Counselor of Cooperation and Cultural Activities of the Embassy of France in Vietnam; Mr. Pham Ngoc Minh, Chairman of Management Board of Vietnam Airlines; with many distinguished guests including USTH partnered universities, high schools, companies as well as staff, lectures and new students of the university.
In the opening speech, Prof. Patrick Boiron summarized the achievements in both training and research activities that USTH has acquired during the past academic year. The year of 2018 marked significant developments of the university, especially the opening of 6 new training programs and an increase of 70% in the number of enrolled students compared to 2017.
In particular, the launch of the Bachelor program in Aeronautical Engineering and the Master program in International Air Transport Operations Management is in cooperation with aviation’s “big four”: Vietnam Airlines, French Civil Aviation University – ENAC, Institut aéronautique et spatial (IAS) and Airbus Corporation. These programs confirmed the close partnership between USTH and Vietnamese, French businesses.
Additionally, the quality of research and the number of international publications of the university has increased steadily. In 2017 and the first 6 months of 2018, USTH has 92 articles published, including 53 articles in the ISI journals.
Furthermore, according to the latest release of Nature Index, in 2018, USTH continues to rank 7th among Vietnamese universities and research institutes; ranked first in the number of international publications after Nature – the world’s leading publishing company in multidisciplinary science. Also during this May, Dr. Tran Dinh Phong – Head of the Department of Research, Innovation and Technology Transfer of USTH was presented the Ta Quang Buu Award by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
On behalf of VAST, Prof. Chau Van Minh highlighted the achievements of USTH during 9 years of operation. “It can be said that 09 years is a very short period to build from scratch an international research university, attached to the leading mission of nurturing the high-quality human resource in science and technology, which is capable of contributing to the national economic modernization in near future.”

President Chau Van Minh also sent warmest congratulation to the new students for choosing USTH as the starting point of their career paths. Besides, he emphasized the dedication of Prof. Patrick Boiron, who devoted “his whole heart and mind” to the management and development of the university. On this occasion, the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam has decided to award Prof. Patrick Boiron Medal of Honor for Contribution to Education.

At the ceremony, when looking back at the history of USTH, Mr. Etienne Rolland-Piègue, representative of the French Embassy said: “Nearly 10 years ago, when Vietnamese higher education is growing rapidly, Vietnam and France had shared a vision and an ambition of the establishment of a Vietnamese-French world-class research university. USTH was born in such context.”

Asserting that USTH is “France’s most important project abroad in the field of education”, Mr. Etienne Rolland-Piègue expressed his pleasure in witnessing an “ambitious and creative project” is being realized thanks to the dedication of the Rector board with all staff and lecturers. He also believed that the time spent at USTH would become the best adventure to the world of Science and Technology for the new students.
Representative of the school, Prof. Patrick Boiron committed that USTH would always accompany and support students on the path of study and research. The university’s biggest aim is to fulfill the mission assigned by Vietnamese Government, which is to provide the best conditions for students to become the elite that the country needs.
Besides, Prof. Patrick Boiron emphasized: “There are no good or bad professions, everyone is evaluated through the dedication when doing the job. I believe that all of you, as USTH students, would understand the importance and the value of your profession, thus strive for the enrichment of the country.”

Also at the ceremony, new graduates of the intake 2015-2018 received their bachelor degree. The event marked the end of their time at USTH and opened new journey for them to continue pursuing their dreams.
