On November 30, 2024, the Student Forum 2024 was held at the University of Science and Technology of Hanoi (USTH). This year, under the theme “Engineering and Technologies Toward Carbon Neutrality,” the forum attracted a large participation from students across 13 universities in Vietnam and internationally.
The Student Forum is an annual scientific research event, first organized in 2020 with the participation of many universities nationwide and major sponsorship from the German International Cooperation Organization (GIZ) within the framework of the technical cooperation program in the energy sector. The event is not only a place for connection and exchange between students and lecturers, but also enhances awareness and scientific research capabilities on energy issues.
After four successful editions, the forum has established itself as a reputational academic playground for students in the energy sector, featuring many high-quality researches and solutions. Continuing that success, the Student Forum 2024 was organized at USTH with the theme “Engineering and Technologies Toward Carbon Neutrality.”
During the opening speech, Prof. Jean-Marc Lavest, the Principal Rector of USTH, emphasized that energy is a crucial foundation for a country’s economic development. Specifically, to double GDP in the next ten years, Vietnam needs to boost energy production while ensuring sustainability in resource exploitation and usage. Transitioning from traditional energy sources to low-carbon energy is a strategic requirement to minimize environmental impacts and respond to climate change. Prof. Jean-Marc Lavest expressed his expectations that the students trained at Vietnamese universities would become future experts and scientists playing significant roles in researching sustainable energy solutions, and developing and implementing effective policies. Prof. Jean-Marc Lavest wished for the event ‘s success and for the participating students to have beneficial experiences, enhancing their awareness and research capabilities on current energy issues.
This year, the forum saw significant participation from students from 13 national and international universities. In total, nearly 120 research papers were presented, focusing on areas such as electric machinery, power electronics, control, renewable energy, efficient energy management, power transmission, and distribution. With the increasing number and quality of participating research papers over the years, the forum has affirmed its status as a reputable academic playground for students in the energy sector.
Moreover, this year’s forum also featured participation from many speakers both domestically and internationally, including RMIT University (Australia), Hanyang University (South Korea), Applied Engineering Systems Co., Ltd, and the German International Cooperation Organization (GIZ).
Also, within the forum’s framework, a signing ceremony for cooperation agreements between six major universities in the energy sector took place, including Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Hanoi University of Industry, Danang University of Science and Technology, Electric Power University, Thuyloi University, and University of Science and Technology of Hanoi (USTH). This marked an important step in enhancing cooperation, developing training, and scientific research between the universities, contributing to improving the quality of human resources in the energy sector in Vietnam.
At the forum, research teams impressively presented their ideas and technological solutions, convincingly answered the questions raised by the judging panel. This reflected their thorough preparation, creativity, and research capability.
At the end of the forum, the judging panel awarded the first prize to the two most outstanding research papers. These included the project “Application for detecting hand gestures and translating ASL sign language: Integrating image processing and sensors” by Tran Anh Phi – a student from USTH and the project “Research on applying machine learning models to classify and locate incidents on transmission lines” by Tran Van Tien, Bui Thi Phuong Thao, Nguyen Minh Hoang, and Pham Thi Kim Huong – students from Hanoi University of Technology. Additionally, the panel also awarded five second prizes, eight third prizes, and one outstanding female prize.
