On September 25, 2020, at the University of Science and Technology of Hanoi (USTH), the Odon Vallet scholarship handover ceremony was held by the Science and Education Association “Rencontres du Vietnam” and Vallet Scholarship Fund for 10 outstanding bachelor and master students of the university.Attending the ceremony, there were Dr. Nguyen Thi Bich Ha – representative of the Vallet Scholarship Fund, Assoc. Prof. Dinh Thi Mai Thanh- Rector of USTH, Mr. Luc Le Calvez, Director of Direction of Research, Innovation and Technology Transfer, USTH staff, lecturers, the scholarship recipients, friends and family members.
The Vallet Scholarship Fund was established in 2001 by Prof. Odon Vallet from France’s Sorbonne University through the Science and Education Association “Rencontres du Vietnam”
At the beginning of every new academic year, from Paris, Prof. Odon Vallet, Prof. Tran Thanh Van- Chairman of the Science and Education Association “Rencontres du Vietnam” and his wife come back to Vietnam to hand over the scholarships to the students with excellent academic achievements at the Temple of Literature in Hanoi.
However, this year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the scholarship handover ceremony at Temple of Literature couldn’t take place as planned; therefore, the Science and Education Association “Rencontres du Vietnam” and Vallet Scholarship Fund decided to hold the ceremony at the university of the scholarship recipients instead.
In 2020, USTH was honored to have 10 bachelor and master students to be granted the Odon Vallet Scholarships.
Although Prof. Odon Vallet and Prof. Tran Thanh Van couldn’t attend the ceremony in person, they sent video messages, in which the two professors congratulated the recipients on their achievements and encouraged them to study harder to achieve the bigger goal in the future.
On behalf of the USTH Rector Board, Assoc. Prof. Dinh Thi Mai Thanh highly appreciated the students’ academic achievements and incessant efforts. She also expressed her gratitude to Prof. Odon Vallet, Prof. Tran Thanh Van, and the Association “Rencontres du Vietnam” for organizing the ceremony.
Assoc. Prof. Dinh Thi Mai Thanh expressed her hope that the fund would continue to accompany and motivate the bachelor and master students to constantly strive in their learning. “The Odon Vallet Scholarships awarded right at the beginning of the new academic year is a meaningful gift to encourage the students to have a better academic year. These scholarships will help the students to make their dreams come true to become future researchers and scientists not only in Vietnam but all over the world”.
The Odon Vallet Scholarships have been awarded for the past 20 years with more than 350 billion dong to nearly 35,000 students. Out of a total of 98 USTH students that have received the Odon Vallet scholarships from 2011 until now, many students have achieved success and reached out to the world, such as Dang Thi Minh Nguyet, Bachelor Gen 4 (2013-2016), received the Excellence Scholarship of the Embassy of France, currently a PhD student at IRD Montpellier Institute for Research and Development; Nguyen Quyen Anh, Bachelor Gen 7 (2016-2019), granted a full scholarship to pursue a master’s degree at Polytechnic University of Paris; Cao Tran Bich Ngoc, Bachelor Gen 7 (2016-2019), received a full scholarship to study at École normale supérieure (ENS, France); Le Thi Lien, Bachelor Gen 8 (2017-2020), won a full scholarship to study at The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP, Italy).
