On December 20th, 2022, USTH’s Direction of Research, Innovation and Technology Transfer (DRITT) organized a seminar “Conventional and innovative approaches in plant molecular function research, a recall” by Dr. Vo Thi Xuan Kieu (Kyung Hee University, South Korea).
Participating in the seminar was Dr. To Thi Mai Huong – Deputy Director of DRITT, Dr. Nguyen Thi Kieu Oanh – Deputy Director of Department of Life Sciences, Dr. Le Thi Van Anh and Dr. Mai Thi Phuong Nga – lecturers of Department of Life Sciences together with USTH students and researchers who are interested in plant research.
The seminar was presented by Dr. Vo Thi Xuan Kieu, a key mentor in Plant Functional Genomics Lab (Kyung Hee University, South Korea). She got a PhD degree in Plant Biotechnology in 2019. As an independent researcher, she has been chasing the goal of creating a friendly network in plant research and encouraging students to approach innovative technologies.
The talk focused on the general road on gene function study in plants from the correlation between genotype and phenotype to molecular mechanisms. On this road various conventional and innovative approaches were summarized following by discussing tricky points of each approach. Finally, emerging approaches were introduced as the foundation of novel strategies on plant molecular function studies.
In the next session – Q&A, USTH lecturers and students had a lively discussion related to plant research and the research environment in KyungHee University with Dr. Vo Thi Xuan Kieu. All of the students showed their interests in studying and researching opportunities in South Korea as well as Dr. Vo Thi Xuan Kieu’s experiences and useful tips in researching. In addition, Dr. Vo Thi Xuan Kieu introduced about Kyung Hee University and specially thanked her Professor – Prof. Jeon Jong-Seong for supporting and collaborating with her in rice functional genomics research.
After the seminar, Dr. Vo Thi Xuan Kieu had meetings and worked with Department of Life Sciences. Her seminar has motivated USTH students and lecturers to continue striving for excellence in research and to contribute in the development of science and technology of the countries.
