The first International Conference on Chemical Sciences (ICCS 2022) took place from December 8 to 11 at the University of Science and Technology of Hanoi (USTH). The event attracted the participation of more than 100 researchers worldwide. Three fields of discussion were Chemistry for Energy Conversion & Storage, Chemistry for Environment Analysis & Treatment, Chemistry for Healthcare.
In an attempt to emphasize the important role that fundamental sciences play in the development of our society and enhance creative thinking for building a sustainable society, the year 2022 is selected by the United Nations as the “International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development”. In the spirit of this wonderful initiative, USTH officially launched the 1st edition of the International Conference on Chemical Sciences (ICCS 2022).
Participating in the conference, on the side of USTH were Prof. Jean – Marc Lavest – Principal Rector, Assoc. Prof. Dinh Thi Mai Thanh – Rector, Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Hai Dang – Vice Rector, Assoc. Prof. Tran Dinh Phong – Vice Rector and all USTH staff, lecturers and students. On the side of speakers, ICCS warmly welcomed outstanding chemists, such as: Prof. Kazunari Domen – University of Tokyo (Japan), Prof. Licheng Sun – KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), Prof. Ngoc T. Bui – University of Oklahoma (USA), …
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Prof. Jean-Marc Lavest expressed his excitement and warmly welcomed all participants. At the same time, he emphasized that after attentive preparation, USTH was proud to have the world-class chemists coming to Vietnam to contribute to the success of the high level international conference series on chemical sciences.
Going along with Prof. Jean-Marc Lavest, Assoc. Prof. Tran Dinh Phong said that the ICCS 2022’s aims were becoming a bridge between Vietnamese chemists and experts worldwide, sharing advances, outstanding contributions, and promoting the development of young Vietnamese chemists’ new ideas. It also was an excellent meeting occasion for young chemists to learn the on-going chemical research, and be aware of current challenges which are waiting for them.
According to Assoc. Prof. Tran Dinh Phong, the conference will be renewed every 2 years, with the expectation of proactively asking questions from Vietnamese chemists and strengthening the network and cooperation with international chemists.
The highlight of the conference was the presentation of the research results of Prof. Kazunari Domen – University of Tokyo (Japan). Prof. Domen is known as one of the best chemists worldwide in the field of Chemistry for Energy Conversion & Storage. His Photocatalysis research includes elements of Hydrogen production, Photochemistry, Visible spectrum, Band gap and Aqueous solution. His visible spectrum research incorporates elements of Solid solution and Nitride. Kazunari Domen has researched Water splitting in several fields, including Hydrogen, Optoelectronics, Semiconductor and Nanotechnology. His study in Inorganic chemistry is interdisciplinary in nature, drawing from both Oxide, Nanoparticle, Adsorption, Metal and Mesoporous material. His research integrates issues of Amorphous solid and Oxygen evolution in his study of Chemical engineering.
Another presentation by Prof. Licheng Sun, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden also received much attention from the scientific community. At the conference, Prof. Licheng Sun shared about catalytic water splitting for solar fuels production – from natural to artificial photosynthesis. His research focuses on Photochemistry, Catalysis, Inorganic chemistry, Dye-sensitized solar cells and Electrochemistry.
The 1st International Conference on Chemical Sciences attracted 9 invited papers and 24 presentations. The conference also featured 20 posters of young chemists to introduce the latest results in scientific research. In particular, the “best poster” award was given to 3 young talented faces, including: Le Thi Thu Hang (title “Chemical synthesis of porous MoSx powder by sol-gel method for energy conversion and storage”), Nguyen Dieu Linh (title “PDA/AuNPs/rGO thin films towards electrochemical detection of circulating tumor cells”), Le Thanh Han ((title “Improving practical value of orange peels essential oil by chemical reactions”).
After 3 days of attractive discussions, the 1st International Conference on Chemical Sciences had achieved its set goals. This is the premise for the success of international conference series on chemical sciences in the future in particular and other scientific conferences in general at USTH. Once again, USTH continues to affirm its pioneering position as well as its ambition to reach the world in connecting and bringing world-class scientists to Vietnam.
Let’s look back at the 1st International Conference on Chemical Sciences’s remarkable images.
