The Second International Conference on Chemical Sciences, organized by the University of Science and Technology of Hanoi (USTH), took place successfully at the Reed Hotel in Ninh Binh from August 27 to 30, 2024.
The conference brought together approximately 90 scientists, researchers, and academics from 11 countries. Under the theme “Chemical Sciences – For A Better Life,” ICCS 2024 focused on exploring how chemical sciences can address current societal challenges and contribute to a safer, more sustainable, and happier life.
In the opening session, Prof. Dinh Thi Mai Thanh – Rector of USTH highlighted that one of the key missions assigned by the governments of Vietnam and France was to develop USTH into a research university. To this end, USTH has been investing in its research facilities, structuring its laboratories and research groups as well as collaborating with scientists from France and other countries. Organizing international conferences is an excellent means to bring scientists worldwide to Vietnam so USTH’s lecturers and Vietnamese researchers can learn the most recent progress, share their work, initiate collaboration and create networks for their future research. For instance, USTH organizes and co-organizes 03 international conference series in Biological Technology, Earth & Environmental Sciences, and Chemical Sciences. Prof. Dinh Thi Mai Thanh also emphasized the importance of ICCS 2024, noting its role as a key event in the lead-up to the 15th anniversary of USTH.
The conference program focused on: (i) Chemistry for Energy Conversion & Storage; (ii) Chemistry for Environmental Analysis & Treatment; (iii) Chemistry of Natural Products; (iv) Chemistry for Healthcare; and (v) Chemistry for Circular Economy. The plenary sections featured five keynote lectures given by highly-reputed scientists: Prof. Randalle Lee (University of Houston, USA), Prof. Licheng Sun (Westlake University, China), Prof. HeonJoong Kang (Seoul National University, Korea), Dr. Vincent Artero and Dr. Marie Carrière (CEA, France). The program also included 12 invited talks, 19 oral presentations and 21 Poster presentations. Among invited speakers featured young Vietnamese scientists who are working oversea and making excellent contributions in their research fields such as Prof Dinh Cao Thang (Queen’s University, Canada), Prof. Cuong Cao (Queen’s University, UK), Dr. Tran Ngoc Huan (College de France, France). During the conference, Vietnamese scientists working in Vietnam also showed their excellent research works which were highly appreciated by international fellows.
ICCS-2024 experienced a super-friendly environment where discussion was open, critical but constructive with the final objective: making progress in chemical sciences to address societal challenges.
Beside scientific discussion, senior scientists highlighted the important role of the young generation and expressed their willingness to support the young Vietnamese scientists. An jury composed of Prof. Sun, Prof. Kang and Dr. Artero evaluated all the posters and awarded 1 best poster prize and 2 second-best poster prizes to 03 students.
After three days, ICCS 2024 concluded successfully, reinforcing its growing stature in the global scientific community. The conference not only demonstrated USTH’s commitment to advancing chemical sciences but also strengthened its role as a crucial hub for international collaboration in research.
