In order to assess students’ English ability for the training classification (3 years/4 years) and suitable class placement, University of Science and Technology of Hanoi organizes an English Placement test for admitted students. This exam is held several times a year.

1. Test takers
All students admitted to the university are required to take this test, except for those who already have an IELTS score of 5.0 or higher or TOEFL iBT score of 45 or higher within the valid period:
- Students admitted to the Bachelor’s level through the admission interviews organized by USTH
- Students admitted to the Bachelor’s level through the admission portal of the Ministry of Education and Training
- Students admitted to the Master’s level
* Students who have IELTS 5.0 or higher (or TOEFL iBT score of 45 or higher) within the valid time, may still choose to take the test to be placed in a higher-level class.
2. Conditions for exemption from placement test
Students are exempted from taking the test if they meet the following conditions: Hold an IELTS English Certificate of 5.0 or higher (or a TOEFL iBT score of 45 or higher) within 02 years and 03 months from the test date.
Other cases will be reviewed and decided by the USTH Admissions Committee.
3. Training classification based on test results
For students admitted to the Bachelor’s level, based on the test results, training classification and class placement are determined based on their test results and English proficiency.
- Students whose test results are equivalent to IELTS 4.0 or below will be assigned to the 4-year training program.
- Students with test results equivalent to IELTS 4.5 are required to attend the summer English class or the B1 intensive English class before being admitted to the 3-year training program.
- Students whose test results are equivalent to IELTS 5.0 or higher will be considered for the 3-year training program.
For students admitted to the Master’s program, those with test results equivalent to 5.0 or higher are exempted from 60 hours of intermediate English courses in the Master’s English program.
4. Test format
The English proficiency test follows the same structure as the IELTS test:
- It includes four skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.
- The total time allocated for the three skills Listening, Reading and Writing is about 150 minutes.
- The Speaking test lasts between 11 and 15 minutes per examinee.
